Mrs. Grueber's 4th Grade Class.
We are celebrating Nebraska's birthday. (Notice some of the pioneer clothes.)

North Bend Elementary is a K-6 school of a little over 300 students. We are located in eastern Nebraska only one hour from Omaha or one hour from Lincoln. Contact me at: cgrossrhode@gmail.com if you want to work on a project together or even Skype.

Grade levels that are working with this project:

4th and 5th grades - Some activities we are interested in participating and sharing with another classroom are:
Track weather and temperatures; Use mapping skills to plan a trip to another classroom; Create a postcard about our school to exchange with other classrooms; Skype/FaceTime. Descriptive writing project. "From My Front Door" We would like to share descriptive writing projects where we will describe what we see from each of our front doors along with pictures of our view. Let's see how different or similar our communities are.

Weather reports:
January 15, 2012 The weather has been unusually mild so far this year in eastern Nebraska. We had 6 inches of snow on one day in the beginning of December. We have not had more than a dusting of snow since then. The temperatures have mostly been mild but can change quickly. Last Tuesday the high temperature for the day was 61º. We had to take our coats off to play outside. On Tuesday, the temperature did not reach 20º. The wind was blowing to make it seem much colder.

January 30, 2012 Still no snow. Temperatures are bouncing up and down. Today they are predicting record-breaking temperatures in the low 50's. We are starting to wish for a snow day sometime in the next month!

February 4-11, 2012 We finally had our first significant snow for 2012. It snowed 10 inches. Unfortunately, it was on a Saturday so we didn't get any snow day. We are waking up to temperatures in the single digits.

March, 2012: As you can tell by the chart below, we have had a VERY mild March. Our average low temperature is 26º F and average high temperature is 49º F. This year, 18 of the first 23 days in March had temperature above 60º F and half of those times the temperature was 70º or higher. Unfortunately, we have also had a dry March. While we normally average 9 inches of snow during the month of March, this year we have not had any snow and less than 1" of rain.

Story:
As you can tell by looking at our data, March of 2012, was a record-breaking year. Our average high temperature in March is 49º F. There were only 2 or 3 days in March that were "normal." We had a high temperature of 60º or higher on 25 of the 31 days in March. It makes us wonder how hot will it be in July!!!

Tell about a stereotype about your country/area. Can you tell us what parts are true or what parts are false?
Some have asked us about being in "Tornado Alley." Those of you in the Midwest are probably aware that for the first time ever, there were tornadoes in February. The town of North Bend has actually been hit by a tornado twice in the last 35 years. Last May and June we had several funnel clouds pass right over the town and surrounding area, but none dropped to the ground. There were some pretty cool pictures of them!

We haven't had bad weather so far this year, but North Platte, NE (about 6 hour drive west) was hit by a tornado on a warm February evening in 2012.

Pictures:
On March 29th we had a chance to Skype with the 4th grade class from Regina Saskatchewan Canada. We had a great time. We didn't even complain when we had to skip half of our recess to do it.
Thank you Mrs. McMurty's class.
