      Indianapolis Time
    March 24, 2013
Indianapolis has been experiencing cooler than usual temperatures for the last several weeks. We are all excited and ready for spring but our temperatures have been more winter like. We are usually in the mid 50's as a high temperature this time of year, but we have been hanging around the low 30's for the last few weeks. Then, while we have been on break for this last week, we began to hear about a winter storm heading our way!!! It has hit today, Sunday. We already have about 4 inches and the snow is still coming down hard. All of the schools in our area, including ours, are on a 2 hour delay for tomorrow. That means that school begins 2 hours after the regular start time. This helps give the snowplows a chance to get the streets cleared and this later start time allows us to drive to school in the daylight instead of darkness. This will certainly change our temperatures, etc. for this project, but I bet that we won't be alone. :)
I will post a picture of our spring snow tomorrow.

March 1st-- March came in like a lamb. Nice weather, High was 67. Then on the Second of March, It roared through our area! A tree was hit by lightening next to our school and exploded. We had very high winds and downpours of rain. We were lucky in our area. Others in our state were not, many lives lost and homes totatlly destroyed in the Southern part of our State.

So, we think it is important to talk about a few myths or stereotypes about Saskatchewan weather and lifestyles. Yes, we do have snow, which can include up to 4 feet high snowbanks but it usually only snows from November to March. Our temperatures during those months can range from +10 degrees celcius to -40 degrees celcius. During some of our really cold spells, we can have temperatures as low as -49 degrees celcius with the windchill. We don't like to go outside on THOSE days. But generally, we dress warm and in layers so that we can enjoy winter outdoor activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, skating and just playing in the snow. We live in houses like most people and use snowmobiles for recreation. Not very many of us have been on a dogsled.
Saskatchewan is located on the prairies in Canada and the snowy landscapes, sundogs and sunny skies are spectacular, in any weather!

Regina has literally been above normal all winter. We have had below normal levels of precipitation. Adults are happy because there is not much snow to shovel, but children want more snow so that they can play in it!

up and down! The low temperature this week was a mild -7-48 degrees celsius (19with the windchill (equal to -54 degrees farenheit) --much warmer than 2 weeks prior. The restfahrenheit) and our high temperature is today at -12 degrees. Regina has LOTS of the class thought March came in like a lion, but just with a quiet roar. They thoughtsnow this because on March 1st, there was a gusty wind blowing and we had the most snowfall that we have had in months. We still have much less snow than last year. Some adultsyear--the kids are happy about this because they do not need to shovel as much. Some adults, such as farmers, want more snow to fall. ALLcan make huge forts but the children want more snow so they can go tobogganning and build snow forts!adults are tired of shovelling!

    Story:
Saskatchewan, or even Canada in general is home to a weather stereotype regarding our weather. Many people think that because of our location, we have snow all of the time and have cold weather year round. We have even had some students in North America ask us if we live in igloos and use dogsleds and snow mobiles for transportation!

    Skyping with Nebraska!
On March 29th we had a wonderful skype session with a class from North Bend, Nebraska. It was fun to compare
The weather and geography. Both classes had a lot of questions to ask each other. We were surprised to learn that some schools have 'Tornado Drills'--which makes sense if you live in 'Tornado Alley' like Nebraska residents do! It was interesting to hear that Nebraska had an unusually warm and drier winter than normal--Regina experienced very similar weather conditions. Both classes thought that March would go out the same way it came in.....like a lamb!

We haven't had bad weather so far this year, but North Platte, NE (about 6 hour drive west) was hit by a tornado on a warm February evening in 2012.

On March 29th we had a chance to Skype with the 4th grade class from Regina Saskatchewan Canada. We had a great time. We didn't even complain when we had to skip half of our recess to do it.
    Thank you Mrs. McMurty's class.
